Box Office 9-8-24
LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” opened with a whopping $110 million this weekend to easily blow away the competition at the box office, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Director Tim Burton’s comedy/horror film is a sequel to his 1988 “Beetlejuice.” Both films star Michael Keaton as a ghost trying to marry someone in the real world and Winona Ryder as his love interest.
“Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has ruled the box office chart for most of its seven-week run, is finally showing signs of slowing down but still claimed second place with $7.2 million Friday through Sunday, Comscore reported.
“Reagan,” a biopic of the nation’s 40th president starring Dennis Quaid, was third with $5.2 million.
Fourth place went to “Alien: Romulus,” which made $3.9 million in its fourth weekend, followed by “It Ends with Us” with $3.7 million in its fifth week.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases at North American theaters were “The Forge” ($2.9 million), “Twisters” ($2.2 million), “Blink Twice” ($2.1 million),”The Greatest of All Time” ($2 million) and “Despicable Me 4” ($1.8 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $150 million. The year-to-date total is $5.94 billion — down 13% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
