Backpack Giveaway
RIVERSIDE (CNS) – In preparation for the start of the fall term, the Riverside County Department of Child Support Services will be joining with nonprofits and others in a “backpack giveaway” next week, distributing hundreds of free backpacks filled with school supplies for students countywide.
The event is set for 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 10 at the agency’s Riverside branch office, located at 2081 Iowa Ave.
There will be presentations focused on community resources for parents and guardians, as well as “free haircuts for kids, bicycle helmets and snacks,” DCSS said in a statement.
“Each attendee will receive a bag containing Riverside County and local parent resource packets, complete with school supplies,” the agency stated. “Giveaways will include essential materials for children ages 3-17, such as writing pads, pens, pencils, crayons, markers and more.”
The event is part of National Child Support Awareness Month, officials said.
Almost all school districts throughout the county will begin K-12 classes for the 2024-25 academic year this month.
Classes in the Riverside Unified and Temecula Valley Unified school districts start the week of Aug. 12, while the Coachella Valley Unified School District’s classes get underway a week later.
DCSS officials said there are over 300,000 children enrolled in public, private and charter schools countywide for 2024-25.
The backpack giveaway’s sponsors include Community Action Partnership of Riverside County, Altura Credit Union, Salon Success, the California Office of Traffic Safety and Food4Less.
