BANNING (CNS) – An inmate being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning died after suffering a medical emergency, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced Sunday.

Deputies from the correctional facility were alerted of an inmate having a medical emergency in the transportation area around 6:20 a.m. Thursday. Custody staff and jail medical personnel administered emergency medical assistance and the inmate was later transported to a hospital by paramedics.

The inmate’s health continued to decline while at the hospital, and staff performed life-saving measures, but he was ultimately pronounced dead Friday.

The inmate was identified as 61-year-old Michael Dupas of Perris and his family was notified of his death.

Investigators from the sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigations Unit assumed the investigation. Anyone with additional information was encouraged to contact investigator Brett Devine at 951-955-7019.
