I-215 Death
MENIFEE (CNS) – A 45-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck as he walked in traffic on Interstate 215 in Menifee, authorities said Wednesday.
Geoff Bishop of Menifee was hit at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on southbound I- 215, just south of McCall Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Brian Seel said Bishop walked onto the freeway for unknown reasons and headed into the flow of traffic within the fast lane.
Moments later, a 41-year-old motorist at the wheel of a 2014 Mercedes E350 going southbound at 65 mph encountered the victim and was unable to brake or swerve in time to avoid him, Seel said.
“The left front of the Mercedes struck the male,” the CHP spokesman said. “The male came to rest in the No. 1 lane.”
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location less than 10 minutes later and pronounced Bishop dead at the scene.
The motorist, whose identity was not disclosed, was not injured. The man, identified only as a Menifee resident, was questioned by CHP officers but not arrested.
“It is unknown at this time if (Bishop) was intoxicated,” Seel said.
An autopsy was pending Wednesday.
Anyone with information relevant to the investigation was asked to contact the Temecula CHP office at 951-466-4300.
