More Rain Sweeping into Riverside County Through Wednesday
RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Another winter storm is sweeping through the Inland Empire Tuesday, with rain and mountain snow expected to fall for the next two days.
Light showers began falling Monday afternoon, with the rain moving farther south into San Diego County Monday evening and overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
A flood watch was issued from 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday morning for the Riverside and San Bernardino County mountains, the Riverside County valleys and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning.
Forecasters said flooding could most likely occur in areas with poor drainage, and urged people to be alert in the mountains for rock slides and rocks in the road.
A winter weather advisory was in effect from 1 a.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday for the mountains.
Scattered and mostly light showers were expected mid-morning Tuesday through Tuesday afternoon, with more moderate to heavy rain developing late Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday morning.
Expected rainfall totals for Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon were 1 to 1.75 inches in the Inland Empire, 1 to 2 inches for the Riverside County mountains, 0.30 to 0.50 inches for the high desert and 0.10 to 0.25 inches for the lower deserts, the NWS said.
Snow levels are expected to be high through Tuesday morning, generally around 8,000 feet or higher, falling to around 7,000 feet Tuesday afternoon, and then 6,000 to 6,500 feet Wednesday morning. Snow totals could be as high as 1 to 2 feet above 8,000 feet.
Periods of gusty southwest to west winds are expected over the mountains and locally into the deserts late Tuesday into Wednesday, with peak gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Winds in the deserts will peak at 30 mph, forecasters said.
The rain is expected to clear out by Thursday, with mild temperatures expected through next weekend, but more light rain was in the forecast for next Monday.
