National History Day

MORENO VALLEY (CNS) – Nearly 400 elementary, junior high and high school students from throughout Riverside County will bring the past into the present Saturday, showcasing their technical and creative skills in the annual National History Day competition.

The seven-hour event is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at Canyon Spring High School in Moreno Valley.

This year’s theme is “Turning Points in History.”

According to the county Office of Education, a total of 386 students are slated to participate, from nine school districts, including private and charter schools.

Just over 200 entries were received for this year’s event. Students will make team presentations, using documentaries, two-dimensional exhibits, websites and paper records to demonstrate how well they know subjects anchored in the theme, officials said.

Some of the presentations scheduled Saturday include: “Columbine Massacre: Transforming School Safety Nationwide”; “From Harlem to the Heart of America: The Musical Legacy of the Harlem Renaissance”; “The Rise & Fall of Lobotomy: A Turning Point in Psychiatry”; and “The 19th Amendment of the U.S.”

No teacher advisers are allowed to participate once the contest gets underway.

The top-scoring teams will advance to the National History Day- California State Competition, slated for April 19-21 at Cal State Sacramento. The national contest is set for June 9-13 at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Results of this year’s competition will be announced next week.
