Charlie Chastain
Former Norco High quarterback Charlie Chastain has become one of California’s leading high school football officials. Chastain, a 1981 graduate of Norco, was the umpire for the CIF Div. 1A state championship bowl game between Fresno Central and Huntington Beach Edison at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo on Saturday.
Edison won, 21-14, when quarterback Sam Thomson connected with Sam Minter on a 52-yard pass and run that put the winning points on the board in the final minute.
Chastain carpooled with the six other officials in the crew. On the way, Chastain received a call that his father-in-law, Lawson Latham had died. Chastain said he was committed to officiating the game and pressed on.
In 1980, Chastain led Norco to a share of the Mountain View League title and the first round of the playoffs where it lost to eventual division champion Covina.
