Thunderstorm, Excessive Heat Warning, Flood Watch Issued in Parts of Riverside County

Thunderstorm

RIVERSIDE (CNS) – There is a chance of thunderstorms in the mountains and deserts of Riverside County Monday following an extreme heat wave that gripped the area last week, the National Weather Service said.

An excessive heat warning in parts of Riverside County due to dangerously hot temperatures in the Coachella Valley expired Sunday, the NWS announced.

The warning was effective until 9 p.m. Sunday for the areas of Palm Desert Country, Coachella, Cathedral City, Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Borrego Springs and La Quinta.

Sunday afternoon, a severe thunderstorm warning and flood warning were issued in the areas of Palm Desert, Aguanga, Anza and Lake Hemet due to a severe thunderstorm near Anza moving northwest at 10 mph, according to the NWS. Gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter size hail were expected in the areas until 6 p.m.

At 2:51 p.m., radar “indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area,” forecasters said. “Between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”

On Sunday, Palm Springs reached a high of 100 degrees, the Riverside metropolitan area reached a high of 84 and the Temecula Valley reached 88, according to the NWS.

During the week, the Coachella Valley was expected to have temperatures ranging from 109 to 112 during the day and drop into the low 80s overnight.

Forecasters predicted the Riverside metropolitan area to have temperatures in the 90s this week. By night, temperatures were expected to drop to the mid-60s and low 70s in the Riverside metropolitan area, according to the NWS.

The Temecula Valley was expected to have temperatures ranging from the high 80s to low 90s this week, dropping to the 60s by night.
