LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The star-studded spy movie “Argylle” retained its spot atop the North American box office, grossing $6.5 million in a down weekend for the movie business overall, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Director Matthew Vaughn’s action/comedy, whose budget was reportedly in the $200 million range, opened with a disappointing $18 million last weekend. This weekend it finished ahead of the horror comedy “Lisa Frankenstein,” which opened with $3.8 million, Comscore reported.

“The Beekeeper” was third with $3.46 million Friday through Sunday in its fifth week in theaters.

Fourth place went to “The Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 1-3,” a multi- season drama about the life of Jesus Christ, which took in $3.15 million in its second week in theaters.

“Wonka” was fifth with $3.1 million in its ninth week, followed by “Migration,” which grossed $3 million in its eighth week.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Anyone But You” ($2.7 million), “Mean Girls” ($1.9 million), “American Fiction” ($1.3 million) and “Poor Things” ($1.1 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $37.9 million. The year-to-date total is $639.4 million — down 15% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
