LOS ANGELES (CNS) – In the slowest box office weekend of the year, “The Nun II” barely edged out “Expend4bles” to retain its top spot, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
“The Nun II” grossed $8.4 million Friday through Sunday in its third week in North American theaters, Comscore reported.
“Expend4bles” — the latest entry in the action franchise headed by Sylvester Stallone and featuring a phalanx of similarly aging stars — opened with $8.3 million.
“A Haunting in Venice” was third with $6.3 million in its second week.
“The Equalizer 3” was fourth with $4.7 million in its fourth week, followed by “Barbie,” which added another $3.2 million to its total in its 10th week in theaters.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” ($3 million), “It Lives Inside” ($2.6 million), “Dumb Money” ($2.5 million), “Blue Beetle” ($1.8 million) and “Oppenheimer” ($1.6 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $51.7 million. The year-to-date total is $7.062 billion — an increase of 26% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
