Excessive Heat Watch
RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Riverside County has been experiencing triple-digit temperatures, with more of the same expected throughout the week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue an excessive heat warning in some areas.
The heat warning have been effective since 11 p.m. Monday in the areas of Palm Springs, Coachella, Palm Desert, Palm Desert Country, La Quinta, Cathedral City, Banning, Desert Hot Springs and Indio. Temperatures in these areas were expected to range from 115 to 122 degrees, according to the NWS.
“A much longer heat wave began Tuesday with highs slowly increasing through the weekend,” forecasters said.
Authorities reminded the public to never leave pets or children inside vehicles on days that are even a little warmer than normal, as locked cars can turn into death traps in mere seconds.
Tuesday’s high temperatures were expected to reach 103 in the Riverside metropolitan area, with lows in the mid-60s. During the week, the Riverside metropolitan area was expected to be in triple digits with evening lows in the high 60s.
The Temecula Valley is expected to have temperatures in the low 90s this week with evening temperatures in the mid-60s, according to the NWS.
Blythe’s temperatures are among the most extreme in the country, with a high of 115 and an expected low of 83. Forecasted high temperatures are expected to reach 120 and above later in the week.
Temperatures in the Coachella Valley were expected to reach a high of 115 degrees with overnight lows around 78.
With Palm Springs expected to hit 112, city-operated cooling centers remained open at Demuth Community Center, James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center and the Palm Springs Public Library. For more information, residents can visit EngagePalmSprings.com.
