Hiker Goes Down

MENIFEE (CNS) – A hiker who collapsed on a hillside trail southwest of Menifee Tuesday was airlifted to safety but ultimately declined medical treatment.

The “hiker down” call was received at 1:44 p.m. in the hills north of Canyon Hills Sports Park, near Heather Ridge Road and Otay Way, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said several engine crews were sent to the location and summoned a sheriff’s helicopter crew to locate the victim, who was spotted immobile and waiting for first responders.

Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies rigged a hoist line, and the chopper crew retrieved the trekker about 2:40 p.m.

The party, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to the sports park and underwent an assessment by paramedics. However, the victim declined to be taken to a hospital for further evaluation or treatment, officials said.

The specific nature of the medical emergency was not provided, but temperatures in the area peaked around 102 degrees Tuesday afternoon, raising the possibility of heat exhaustion, which the National Weather Service has posted warnings about for the remainder of the week due to the ongoing heat wave.
