LA ’28 Olympic Games Venues
LOS ANGELES – Organizers for the 2028 Olympic Games announced Monday that sailing events will be split between the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro and Belmont Shore in Long Beach.
The Port of Los Angeles will host six boat events, including men’s and women’s dinghy, skiff, mixed dinghy and mixed multihull. Long Beach is expected to host four board events, including men’s and women’s windsurfing and kiteboarding.
“Sailing has a long history in our city and San Pedro will shine on the world stage,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming the world’s best sailors to compete in these exciting events.”
In April, LA28, the organizing committee for the Games, announced that Long Beach would host 11 events, with sailing expected to return to the area for the first time since the 1984 Olympics. However, Los Angeles City Councilman Tim McOsker, who represents the Harbor Area, advocated for sailing events to also be held in San Pedro.
“I’m grateful to the LA28 committee and to the passionate sailing advocates from the One-Five (Council District 15) and beyond who helped make this possible,” the councilman said in a statement.
“I look forward to working with LA28 to ensure that the Games uplift the sports, inspire fans, highlight the immense talent of the athletes, and showcase the very best of the LA Harbor and the City of Los Angeles on the global stage.”
During the 1932 Olympics, the Port of Los Angeles hosted sailing at their Outer Harbor area, which will be used again in 2028.
According to LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover, the Games will utilize what was described as two of the “best locations” along the Pacific coastline for sailing competitions. Hoover noted that the agreement is supported by World Sailing, the international governing body for the sport.
“We look forward to the work ahead with LA28 and the IOC (International Olympic Committee), plus our national federations and sailors to deliver some truly world-class sport in 2028,” CEO of World Sailing David Graham said in a statement.
LA28 noted the sailing events will be staged consecutively with the boards first up at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, followed by the boat racing portion of the sailing competition in Port of Los Angeles.
The two venues are approximately 10 miles from each other.
Los Angeles will host a majority of events in the downtown area, Westside and in the San Fernando Valley. Long Beach is expected to host about 11 events for the Games.
Alongside sailing competitions, the city will host beach volleyball at Alamitos Beach, coastal rowing at the nearby waterfront, target shooting in the Long Beach Convention Center, sport climbing at the site’s parking lot, as well as water polo and artistic swimming at a temporary pool.
“Long Beach is the premiere location for windsurfing and kite — two outstanding events that will captivate spectators,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement.
“We hosted sailing competitions during the 1984 Olympic Games, and we cannot wait to continue our legacy and show our beautiful coastline to the world once again in 2028.”
LA28 is expected to release the full 2028 competition schedule for all Olympic sports later this summer.
