Shots Fired in Menifee

MENIFEE (CNS) – Two men allegedly opened fire in the parking lot of a Menifee retail outlet, possibly to frighten customers or others who were not injured, authorities said last Thursday.

Alonzo Jalen Blackmon, 19, of San Francisco and Samuel Allen Fellows, 21, of Buckeye, Arizona, were arrested and booked into Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta Wednesday on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. Fellows was additionally booked for allegedly perpetrating a felony while on bail.

Blackmon is being held on $25,000 bail, while Fellows is being held on $45,000 bail.

According to the Menifee Police Department, just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, the suspects parked in front of the Ross Dress For Less store at 30141 Antelope Road, allegedly pulled handguns and opened fire, possibly randomly, aiming at no identifiable targets.

Customers and staff at the location immediately called police.

Agency spokesman Chase Coburn said patrol officers reached the store minutes later but did not find the alleged shooters, nor any victims.

“They secured the area and began gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses,” Coburn said.

Relying on witnesses’ descriptions and other evidence collected at the scene, investigators quickly identified the vehicle in which the perpetrators fled, according to the police spokesman. The car was spotted a mile away, and the occupants — Blackmon and Fellows — were detained without incident, Coburn said.

“A search of the suspects’ vehicle resulted in the recovery of additional evidence directly linking them to the crime,” he said.

A specific motive for the alleged offenses was not provided. No victims appeared at regional hospitals seeking treatment for injuries stemming from the gunfire, according to Coburn.

Background information on the men was unavailable, including the alleged acts tied to Fellows’ earlier arrest.

Anyone with information relevant to the investigation was asked to contact detectives at 951-723-1607.
