Multi-Vehicle Collision East of Perris

PERRIS (CNS) – Two people were killed and several others injured in a three-vehicle collision just east of Perris, authorities said Monday.

The crash was reported at 11:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Bernasconi Road and Ramona Expressway in the community of Lakeview, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Javier Navarro said a 2013 Nissan Altima, occupied by both the driver and a front seat passenger, was going eastbound on the Expressway, approaching Bernasconi at an unconfirmed speed, when the motorist inexplicably “veered to the left and crossed the raised concrete median” separating the east- and westbound lanes.

Navarro said the Nissan ended up directly “in the path of a 2020 Toyota Rav4” traveling westbound.

The two vehicles collided, after which the Nissan spun forward and hit a 2015 Kia Optima that was following close behind the Toyota, according to the CHP spokesman.

Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location minutes later and pronounced the two occupants of the Nissan, neither of whom were immediately identified, dead at the scene.

The occupants of the other two vehicles suffered unspecified non-life- threatening injuries and were taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment.

Both sides of the Expressway were shut down while a preliminary investigation was conducted and the wreckage cleared. The closures were lifted around 3 a.m. Monday.Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP Riverside office at 951-324-7210.
