RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Riverside firefighters and police officers next week will display gear, offer tips on what to do in case of an emergency and provide a host of demonstrations during an event to mark National Preparedness Month.

The annual “Public Safety Preparedness Expo,” held every September, is set for noon on Saturday, Sept. 13, in the parking lot for the Galleria at Tyler Mall.

“This year’s theme, `Preparedness Starts at Home,’ emphasizes the importance of creating emergency plans and building disaster supply kits,” according to a Riverside Fire Department statement. “Our goal is to encourage individuals, families, schools, businesses and neighborhoods to take proactive steps toward emergency preparedness.”

According to expo organizers, there will be CPR training, displays of ladder trucks and police patrol vehicles, information on how to form neighborhood watches, as well as details on how to join community emergency response teams.

Fire Chief Steve McKinster said the event will additionally underscore the need for readiness to evacuate at a moment’s notice, relying on planning well in advance.

“The wildfires and extreme weather we’ve seen across the country are a powerful reminder of why it’s so important for our communities to be prepared before disaster strikes,” he said.

There will be a raffle drawing during the event, offering the chance for entrants to win “Dinner for 4 at a Fire Station,” the chief said.
