Boy With Air Gun Creates Scare
MENIFEE (CNS) – A student carried what appeared to be a handgun onto a Menifee high school campus last Thursday, prompting a lockdown until authorities later confirmed that it was actually a pellet pistol and not a deadly threat.
Administrators at Heritage High School on Briggs Road alerted a resource officer — a sworn policeman assigned to security — shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday that social media posts in circulation suggested a boy was on the grounds, carrying a handgun, according to the Menifee Police Department.
A lockdown was immediately implemented, keeping students and staff in classrooms, and multiple police units converged on the campus to determine whether there was a credible threat, agency spokesman Chase Coburn said.
“During the search, officers were able to identify the student and subsequently located him on campus,” Coburn said. “The student was detained without incident. A search of the student’s backpack revealed an air pistol — BB gun — that lacked the required orange safety tip and closely resembled a real firearm.”
The lockdown was lifted later in the morning. No one was injured.
The investigation delved deeper and uncovered “additional images depicting weapons” on the youth’s social media pages, according to Coburn.
“As a result … detectives obtained and served a search warrant at the student’s residence,” he said. “This investigation remains active, and additional details will be provided when they become available.”
No formal arrests were announced.
The teenager and his parents were not identified.
