San Jacinto to Winchester Expressway
RIVERSIDE (CNS) – A $1 billion project to build a 12-mile expressway between San Jacinto and Winchester to expedite traffic flows still doesn’t have a name, which county officials are hoping residents will help select by the end of next week.
The proposed four-lane expressway is in the final planning stages after more than 20 years of environmental studies, surveys, engineering and design drafts, according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission.
The agency said the one thing the north-south project lacks is a good name.
RCTC officials have seven options for what to christen it, all listed at the following site: www.rctc.org/expressway-renaming/.
The agency intends to close the survey on Aug. 9. Until then, residents have an opportunity to cast their votes. A few of the possible names include “Hemecinto Expressway,” “Heritage Expressway” and “Pleasant Valley Expressway.”
“The new name will be revealed in the fall,” according to RCTC.
The expressway, until now dubbed the “Highway 79 Realignment Project,” will require multiple phases of construction, ultimately connecting Domenigoni Parkway in San Jacinto to Gilman Springs Road in Winchester, west of Diamond Valley Lake, officials said.
The four-lane corridor will be part of the state highway system, intersecting Highway 74 near Homeland.
A potential groundbreaking date has not been announced, though it will likely be more than a year down the road.
