Women’s Health Fair

Last Saturday, the second annual Women’s Health and Safety Resource Fair was held at the Mead Valley Community Center. The event provided attendees with resources from medical facilities in the surrounding area, along with self-defense classes, information about food pantries and more.
Riverside University Health Services (RUHS) held a table to inform attendees about the different medical services it offers.
Linda Tra, the community divisions coordinator for RUHS Medical Center and Community Health Centers, said, “We service anyone who has Medi-Cal, Medicare — even if they don’t have health insurance, we’ll still treat them.”
These services include pregnancy testing, cancer screenings, wellness visits, prenatal care, maternity care and more.
However, RUHS, Kaiser, Planned Parenthood and other medical facilities weren’t the only organizations handing out informational pamphlets and flyers. Different food pantries and even a grocery store were there, offering a hand to anyone who is in a tough spot.
Mothers Nutritional Center is a grocery store meant to help mothers on the go. Shoppers walk in, let employees know what they need, and then an employee retrieves the products and places them at the register — unlike a traditional grocery store, where the shopper has to search the aisles.
Maria Vasquez, who was representing Mothers Nutritional Center, said the store has special offerings for people who are enrolled in EBT.
“We have a program called ‘Add Milk.’ Someone can come in and buy two gallons of milk, pay with EBT, and we automatically give them $10 in store credit so they can get more produce,” Vasquez said.
Mothers Nutritional Center is located at 1675 N. Perris Blvd., Units F5 and F6, Perris, CA 92571.
Samuel Roberts, the legislative assistant for Riverside First District Supervisor Jose Medina, is behind the Women’s Health and Safety Resource Fair. His goal was to provide help to people who might need it.
“I knew two women last year who were being domestically abused,” Roberts said. “I wanted to give them a space where resources were available.”
More than 50 booths were at the second annual fair on Saturday which gave attendees access to different health and safety resources. Roberts said he plans on continuing this fair for years to come.
