Apothecary Jars

By Mia Rotell and Lauren Rotell

Is your bone powder or bat’s blood taking up precious cabinet space? Transfer your ingredients into smaller, uniquely sized jars and display them somewhere convenient — just don’t forget the label!

What You Need

●      An empty jar or bottle

●      A label of any kind

●      A creepy filling (such as flour, water with red food coloring, or short-grain white rice)

Instructions

Step 1: Open the jar or bottle and set the lid or stopper aside.

Step 2: Decide what you want inside the bottle. Flour works well as “bone powder,” while red-dyed water makes convincing “bat’s blood.” You can also use short-grain white rice or sushi rice for “maggot eggs,” or dry corn kernels for “scarecrow’s teeth.” Let your creativity fly!

Step 3: Pour your chosen ingredient into the bottle and tighten the lid. Fill it to your desired amount — sometimes a half-full jar looks even spookier than a full one.

Step 4: Attach your label to the jar. You can write in chalk on a chalkboard sticker, print a label onto a sticker sheet, design one on a site like Canva, or get it professionally printed. The style is entirely up to you!

Tip: Arranging skinny vases of different shapes and sizes filled with various “ingredients” creates an authentic witch’s apothecary look. Just make sure to choose containers that can be sealed with a cork stopper!
