RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Girls and young women in Riverside County interested in fire service careers can apply between now and Jan. 31 to attend Cal Fire orientation camps that will feature a range of hands-on activities, including firefighting.

The “Camp Cinder” program offers attendees between 16 and 18 years old the opportunity to take part in gatherings at either San Luis Obispo, where participants are housed at the Cal Poly campus, or in Shasta County, where they’re housed on the Shasta College campus.

“Campers will get to experience a wide range of exciting firefighting experiences, including vehicle extrication and rescue, ropes and knots, water rescue, hose movement and hose lays, ladders, helicopter operations, self- contained breathing apparatuses, wildland line cutting, leadership skills and teamwork exercises,” according to a Cal Fire statement.

The program is intended to enrich attendees’ understanding of statewide fire service and provide impetus for prospective future female firefighters to pursue their dreams.

“Camp Cinder provides young women a safe, dynamic, interactive and challenging environment to gain strength, knowledge and confidence in their ability to excel in the profession of firefighting and beyond,” Cal Fire stated.

The Shasta camp is slated for June 17-21, and the San Luis Obispo camp is scheduled June 24-28.
