PALM SPRINGS (CNS) – The Palm Springs Art Museum and Desert X have partnered to launch a weekend of free panels, workshops, discussions and artists studio visits starting Friday.

The weekend of events, “Desert r&d,” will begin at 2 p.m. Friday with an artist talk with Cara Romero at the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 N. Museum Drive, according to a statement from Desert X. It will feature her photographs, myths and stories of the desert landscape.

The first day will also include a conversation with the museum’s JoAnn McGrath Executive Director Adam Lerner and Desert X Artistic Director Neville Wakefield about what it means to work curatorially in the desert landscape, Desert X officials said. A launch celebration will close out the first day at 7 p.m. in Drift Hotel, 284 S. Indian Canyon Drive.

The events, which are set to continue through Sunday will celebrate and make space for research and development through half-baked thoughts, process-based practices, ongoing experiments and unanswered questions, according to Desert X.

“Join us this spring as we gather a diverse group of creative practitioners, including artists, scientists, writers and thinkers, to explore global questions with a local focus, employing the desert as a research laboratory,” Desert X officials wrote in a statement.

Saturday’s program will begin at 10 a.m. with artists discussing their climate-related work and expertise at the Ace Hotel and Swim Club, 701 E. Palm Canyon Drive, according to organizers. Events set to follow are a lunch and Black History Tour at noon with Deiter Crawford in Palm Springs, and a hands-on discussion and practice at 3:30 p.m. with Maria Maea and Ronald Rael in Desert Hot Springs.

Sunday will consist of BoxoHOUSE artist-in-residence Eshan Rafi sharing his artistic approaches at 10 a.m. followed by a picnic and self-guided tour at 11 a.m., both in Joshua Tree, and a self-driving tour of artists’ studios at various locations in the High Desert, organizers said.

Wakefield and 2025 Co-curator Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas curated the program with Palm Springs Art Museum Chief Education and Community Engagement Officer Luisa Heredia and Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Sharrissa Iqbal, according to officials.

Desert X is a biennial outdoor art exhibition in the Coachella Valley and will begin March 8, 2025.
