Alcohol Sale to Minor
RIVERSIDE (CNS) – A retail clerk has been cited for allegedly selling alcohol to a minor following a decoy operation in Perris, authorities said.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department coordinated with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to conduct nine minor decoy operations and an additional shoulder tap operation at retail stores earlier this month, sheriff’s officials said Friday.
The clerk was given the citation on Jan. 12 and could face a minimum fine of $250 and/or 24 to 32 hours of community service for a first-time violation.
The decoy operations involved minors who were under the supervision of authorities attempting to purchase alcohol from numerous retail licensees in order to target employees or owners of the establishments.
The shoulder tap operation involved minors attempting to ask patrons outside a liquor or convenience store to buy them alcohol with the supervision of a peace officer nearby, according to the sheriff’s department.
The fines and penalties for a shoulder tap may include arrests for the adult who purchases alcohol for minors, a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service, officials said.
Funding for the operations were provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
