RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Riverside County sheriff’s officials Wednesday cautioned motorists countywide to be extra careful of the ghouls, goblins, ghosts and other costumed figures who will be out on Halloween, emphasizing the importance of driving safe and sober.

“We want our community to have a fun night out on Halloween, but to also stay safe and make responsible choices,” sheriff’s Deputy Chris Wheeler said. “If your night involves drinking, please make sure you plan for a sober ride home. Even one drink can impair judgment.”

Sheriff’s deputies in La Quinta, Moreno Valley, Perris, San Jacinto, Temecula and other locations will be stepping up traffic enforcement to ensure pedestrian safety and crack down on scofflaws.

Officials urged drivers to pay close attention at pedestrian crossings and along roadway shoulders, where trick-or-treaters are likely to be. Residents going in and out of driveways should also look both ways and take it slow.

Parents and guardians who plan to walk with their kids were asked to wear bright clothes and place reflective tape on their youngsters’ bags and buckets to make them more visible to drivers.

“Have kids use flashlights or glow sticks to make it easier for drivers to see them,” Wheeler said.

Officials said anyone planning to attend Halloween parties where alcoholic beverages are served, or visit pubs and bars, should arrange for a designated sober driver to take them home, or utilize ride-sharing services.
