Blue Beetle Tops Barbie At The Box Office

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Blue Beetle” has ended the reign of “Barbie” atop the box office, opening with $25.4 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The newest superhero movie from Warner Brothers and DC Comics, which stars Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero, became the first film to topple “Barbie” from the No. 1 spot since the latter opened five weeks ago.

Director Greta Gerwig’s live-action story about the iconic Mattel toy was in second place with $21.5 million Friday through Sunday, and has now grossed over $567 million domestically and over $1.279 billion worldwide, Comscore reported.

“Oppenheimer” was in third place, grossing $10.6 million in its fifth week.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” was fourth with $8.4 million in its third week, followed by “Strays,” which opened with $8.3 million.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Meg 2: The Trench” ($6.7 million), “Talk To Me” ($3.1 million), “Haunted Mansion” ($3 million), “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” ($2.7 million) and “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” ($2.5 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $99 million. The year-to-date total is $6.484 billion — an increase of 24% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
