`The Nun II’ Beats `The Equalizer 3,’ Opens with $32.6 Million

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “The Nun II” opened with $32.6 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The horror film — a continuation of the “Conjuring” universe — beat out “The Equalizer 3,” which slipped to $12.1 million one week after opening in first place.

Yet another sequel, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” opened in third place with $10 million, Comscore reported.

The Hindi-language thriller “Jawan” opened in fourth place with $6.1 million Friday through Sunday, followed by “Barbie,” which added another $5.9 million in its eighth week in theaters.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Blue Beetle” ($3.7 million), “Gran Turismo” ($3.3 million), “Oppenheimer” ($3 million), “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” ($2.6 million) and “Bottoms” ($2 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $88.7 million. The year-to-date total is $6.894 billion — an increase of 26% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
