WINCHESTER (CNS) – A competition to snag largemouth bass will be held Saturday at Lake Skinner in Winchester, where the fishing derby will precede a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to celebrate completion of numerous upgrades around the boat launch.

Gates open at the Lake Skinner Recreational Area at 7 a.m. Saturday, where the derby will run until early afternoon. The contest will award prizes for the best catch of bass, according to the Riverside County Regional Park & Open Space District.

Over the last 12 months, the launch facility has undergone infrastructure improvements paid for utilizing the county’s remaining federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. The county received a disbursal totaling $480 million in 2021. By law, all of the money was supposed to be allocated to projects by Dec. 31, 2024.

“The reopening of the boat launch and the bass fishing derby bring our community together to enjoy everything Lake Skinner has to offer,” Third District Supervisor Chuck Washington said. “These events create opportunities for families, anglers and visitors to connect while supporting local businesses.”

While the derby will run all morning, the ribbon-cutting will take place at noon, when Washington, park officials and others will gather to mark the occasion.

The manmade lake, which is the main feature of the 8,800-acre recreation area, is situated within a few miles of French Valley Airport and “has long been a favorite among recreational and tournament anglers throughout Southern California,” according to a county statement.
