Hit-and-Run

RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Criminal charges are being sought against a man suspected of running over and killing a 53-year-old woman in Woodcrest, authorities said Wednesday.

Donna Machelle Washington of Riverside was fatally struck on the afternoon of Nov. 29 as she was walking along Van Buren Boulevard, just west of Canyon View Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, in the ensuing three weeks, investigators were able to track down the motorist who allegedly perpetrated the hit-and-run.

Agency spokesman Javier Navarro told City News Service that the driver was interviewed, and “based on his statements,” investigators filed a request for charges with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

The status of the filing was not immediately known.

Navarro said that, for unspecified reasons, the suspect was not booked into jail, and because of that, “we didn’t want to give out his name to the public.”

According to the CHP, Washington was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup on the westbound side of Van Buren.

Preliminary evidence revealed that the motorist “allowed his vehicle to veer to the right shoulder and collide with Washington,” after which he allegedly fled the area, Navarro said.

Anyone with information relevant to the investigation was encouraged to contact the CHP’s Riverside office at 951-637-8000.
