Railroad Tracks Killing

RIVERSIDE (CNS) – A felon accused of fatally stabbing a 54-year-old man adjacent to railroad tracks near downtown Riverside is slated to be arraigned next week.

Robert Thomas Campbell, 26, of Murrieta is charged with murder, a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony and parole violations in the slaying last month of Charles Edwin Jensen of Yucaipa.

Campbell made his initial court appearance last week, during which Riverside County Superior Court Judge Walter Kubelun appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for Nov. 1 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The defendant is being held without bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

According to Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback, on the afternoon of Sept. 29, Campbell was involved in an unspecified confrontation with Jensen in the 2500 block of Kansas Avenue, beneath the 60/91/215 interchange, where Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks parallel the street.

Campbell pulled a knife, inflicting “multiple stab wounds,” Railsback alleged.

He said that patrol officers were called to the location after someone discovered Jensen’s body. The investigation was turned over to the Robbery- Homicide Unit, whose detectives ultimately identified Campbell as the alleged assailant.

No other details were provided, including a possible motive.

Detectives learned Campbell had been jailed a week after Jensen’s death for alleged parole violations. He was already in custody when prosecutors filed the murder charge against him, Railsback said.

Court records show the defendant has prior convictions for burglary, elder abuse, possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.
