Albert Frey Exhibition
PALM SPRINGS (CNS) – The Palm Springs Art Museum’s new exhibition “Albert Frey: Inventive Modernist” opened Saturday, and the museum’s annual Art Party fundraiser, honoring the legacy of the mid-century modern architect, will be held in late January.
The exhibit will opened at the Architecture and Design Center, Edward Harris Pavilion, located at 300 S. Palm Canyon Drive. It features various architectural models, drawings, films, photographs and furniture.
The Swiss-born architect moved to Palm Springs in 1939 and remained until his death in 1998. He was most noted for his residential designs but his other works included the Aerial Tramway Valley Station and the Tramway Gas Station.
Frey’s architectural style, characterized as a “simple but severe” style of desert modernism, will be on display until June 3, museum officials said. It will honor the impact he had on the architectural community.
“Through his design philosophy of clean lines, minimalism, and a seamless integration with the natural environment, Frey not only paid homage to the unique beauty of the desert but also demonstrated a profound understanding of the region’s challenging climate and environmental conditions,” according to museum officials.
The fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at the museum’s main galleries, 101 N. Museum Drive. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception followed by a dinner at 7:30 p.m., an hour before the night is closed out with entertainment and dancing.
“This fundraiser comes at a crucial time when we are still rebuilding our programming after the pandemic closure,” museum Executive Director/CEO Adam Lerner said in a statement. “Because of the generous support of the gala sponsors and attendees, we are able to further the museum’s mission of being an all-inclusive institution by developing new ways to connect with our entire community.”
