Two-Thirds Approval was Required

The business tax designed to assist the City of Perris pay for infrastructure and road maintenance, looks to have failed to garner the two-thirds voter approval in Tuesday’s lone ballot question.

With 100% of the received ballots counted, the “Yes” vote in favor of levying the tax, garnered 52% of the vote. While an undetermined number of mail ballots hat yet to be counted, those in favor represented 125 votes more than those opposed. But the likelihood of the remaining votes making up an additional 14% needed to garner two-thirds approval, is remote.

In approving the ballot measure, the Perris City Council stated the proposed tax, “could provide approximately $4 million annually for the improvement, operation, maintenance, repair and/or restoration of Perris public roads, including truck routes, collector streets, and arterial streets.” 

The city noted that the increase in the number of distribution warehouses and industrial businesses over the past 15 years, has increased traffic in Perris, which has, “increased the City’s costs relating to the improvement, operation, maintenance, repair and/or restoration of Perris public roads.”
