Reigning Champ Wins Riverside County Spelling Bee

RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Avijeet Randhawa successfully defended his Riverside County Spelling Bee title to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held in May.

The eighth grader at Auburndale Intermediate School in Corona correctly spelled crescendo to win Thursday’s bee at the Riverside County Office of Education’s Conference Center.

“I’ve been getting up at 4:30 every morning and studying for 5-7 hours every day for the last few months in preparation for this,” Avijeet said. “I’m just going to keep my fingers crossed as I go to the national competition.”

Avijeet said he makes it a habit to learn and repeat 500 to 800 words daily.

The bee lasted 19 rounds and began with 26 spellers from fourth through eighth grade who attend public, private and charter schools.

The national bee will be held May 28-30 at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Avijeet was among nine spellers tying for 12th in the 2023 national bee.

A member of the Randhawa family has won the county bee all eight times it has been held since 2016.

Oldest sister Aisha Randhawa won in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The 2020 bee was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
