Norco Rodeo Returns

The Norco Mounted Posse PRCA Rodeo is holding more than its 38th annual celebration of the equestrian lifestyle of Horsetown, USA this weekend. It’s toasting itself and its survival in a turbulent climate that has seen other rodeos fall by the wayside in Southern California.

Cowgirls and cowboys, including 52 barrel racers, 40 bull riders, 14 bareback riders, 12 saddle bronco riders, 21 tie-down ropers, 44 team ropers, and 16 steer wrestlers, will be competing for 45 thousand dollars in prize money at the George Ingalls Equestrian Events Center.

Resuming in 2022 after a two-year hiatus triggered by the pandemic, last year’s rodeo attracted about 15 thousand fans.

The famed Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo beleaguered by a combination of the pandemic followed by a horse virus, announced its end last year. Rodeos in Chino, Lake Elsinore, and San Dimas have been canceled as well.

The Norco rodeo endures because of the strong support of the community and sponsors, said rodeo chairwoman Diane Summers.

The 2024 rodeo includes Sunday’s salute to law enforcement with Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco serving as grand marshal.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Events begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The competition starts at 5;30 p.m. on Sunday.
