Riverside County Deputy Fatally Shoots Female Suspect During Fight in Corona
CORONA (CNS) – A Riverside County sheriff‘s deputy fatally shot a female suspect in Corona early Tuesday while grappling with another suspect who was allegedly trying to wrestle away the lawman’s gun.
According to the sheriff’s department, a deputy tried to make contact with “multiple suspects” around 1:10 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Sixth Street, between Lincoln and Buena Vista avenues. It was unclear why the deputy was approaching the suspects, or how many people were involved.
“The subjects took off running, and the deputy pursued them on foot,” according to a sheriff’s department statement. “When the deputy turned the corner of a building, a male suspect lunged at him, and a fight ensued.”
While the deputy was struggling with the male suspect, a female suspect also began assaulting the deputy, prompting the deputy to open fire, striking the female, sheriff’s officials said. The deputy also continued struggling with the male suspect, “who was attempting to take his firearm, until good Samaritans arrived and assisted in detaining the male suspect.”
Life-saving measures were rendered to the wounded woman until the arrival of paramedics, who took her to a hospital, where she later died.
Investigators withheld the name of the woman pending notification of relatives.
The deputy was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, while the male suspect was treated for minor injuries, sheriff’s officials said.
Eric Nourani, 33, of San Diego County was booked Tuesday into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, mayhem, and resisting an officer with violence, according to sheriff’s officials.
The deputy who fired the shots in was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, under department policy. The deputy’s name was not released.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting was urged to call Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Investigator J. Letterly or Senior District Attorney Investigator J. Ferrer of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Force Investigations Detail at 951-955-2777.
