Composting Class

RIVERSIDE (CNS) – The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources will host a free backyard composting class and a “make your own worm bin” workshop this weekend in Moreno Valley.

The free class and workshop are scheduled at 9 a.m. Saturday at 14310 Frederick St.

“Residents will learn how to recycle organic resources, such as yard trimmings, as well as fruit and vegetable waste into a dark, crumbly, sweet- smelling soil conditioner,” Supervising Recycling Specialist Janet Moreland said in a statement.

Residents will also learn how compost can be used to enrich the soil in gardens, lawns and house plants.

The free backyard composting class will begin at 9 a.m., and low-cost compost bins will be available for purchase at the location. Residents will then learn how to further breakdown food and yard waste with help from worms, through a process known as vermicomposting, according to the department.

The Vermicomposting and Make Your Own Worm Bin workshop will begin at 10 a.m., immediately following the composting class. Worm bin kits will also be available for purchase.

A list of materials needed for the class can be found at rcwaste.org/community-outreach/free-classes/vermicomposting.

The class and workshop will end by 1 p.m.

For more information, residents can contact Moreland at 951-486-3200.
