RIVERSIDE (CNS) – The city of Riverside received a federal allocation totaling $2.5 million for cleanup and conversion of a former U.S. National Guard armory to a recreational facility, officials announced last Friday.

The Community Project Funding is earmarked for the “Put the River Back in Riverside” campaign spearheaded by Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson.

She said the funds will enable the city to convert the 12,000-square- foot armory into a “multi-use arts and recreation building,” as well as pay for environmental rehabilitation, building stabilization and other requirements at the site, located on a 4.67-acre section of Fairmount Park, part of which is adjacent to the Pomona (60) Freeway.

“As a major entry point for our city, Fairmount Park provides an opportunity for our residents and visitors to explore the river and all its natural beauty,” the mayor said.

Rep. Mark Takano, D-Riverside, worked to secure the Community Project Funding grant, saying it will serve to breathe “life back into the armory building.”
