Road Rage Shooting
BANNING (CNS) – A 45-year-old man suspected of shooting a motorist during an apparent road rage confrontation south of Corona while his child sat next to him in the car was out of custody Monday after posting a $35,000 bond.
Luis Orlando Quiroz of Corona was arrested and booked into the Smith Correctional Facility Thursday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon resulting in great bodily injury, child endangerment and illegal possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
Quiroz met his bail requirement Friday afternoon and was released from the Banning jail.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the alleged attack occurred about 11:40 p.m. on June 23 in the area of Dawson Canyon and Temescal Canyon roads.
Sgt. Patrick Montalvo said that the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was driving northbound on Temescal Canyon “when he was struck by gunfire.”
The man was able to drive himself to a hospital for treatment of a non- life-threatening wound, and deputies went to the location to take a report several hours later.
Montalvo said the ensuing investigation led to the identification of Quiroz as the alleged assailant, though specific details regarding what prompted the roadway attack were not provided.
“It was later learned that Quiroz’s child was in the vehicle during the shooting and was unharmed,” the sergeant said.
Quiroz was taken into custody without incident after he was interviewed by detectives at the sheriff’s Lake Mathews Station Thursday morning.
