Chic Halloween

Before you spend $30 on a fall decoration, check your craft closet! Did you know you can take any small plastic Halloween or fall decoration, slather on a paint-and-baking-soda mixture to give it a new look? Simple decorations become something straight out of a home magazine! The texture, color, and finish is what transforms it into a showstopping piece that costs about seven dollars and a crisp autumnal afternoon — so, grab your coffee, your plastic decoration and get to mixing!
What You Need
- Acrylic paint
- A paintbrush that can be thrown away afterward
- A plastic Halloween or fall decoration
- Baking soda
- A small bowl to mix the paint and baking soda together
- Parchment paper or something to place the object on while it dries
How to Make It
Step 1: Place a sheet of parchment paper on your work surface.
Step 2: Grab your mixing bowl and squeeze in enough paint to cover the surface of your decoration.
Step 3: Sprinkle baking soda into the paint mixture a little bit at a time. A thick texture is desirable, but avoid creating clumps. Mix until the baking soda is evenly incorporated and there are no clumps.
Step 4: You’ll know the paint mixture is ready when it is thick from the baking soda but still wet like regular paint.
Step 5: Heavily brush the mixture onto your decoration, making sure to cover the surface evenly.
Step 6: Let it dry for about 30 minutes, then come back and brush on another coat if you want a thicker heavier finish or if your object is bigger.
Step 7: Let it dry for another 30 minutes and add another coat if desired.
Step 8: Let the decoration dry completely, and you’re done!
Tip: Take an eyeshadow brush, dip it into a dark color of eyeshadow, and accentuate the shadows on your decoration to give it more dimension. This works especially well with skulls, pumpkins, ghosts, and more! While the layer is drying, lightly brush your paintbrush over it to give it some extra texture.
