Walk to Help Homeless Vets
MORENO VALLEY (CNS) – Several hundred people are slated to turn out Saturday for a fundraiser walk around March Air Reserve Base in Moreno Valley to raise money for homeless military veterans.
“We’re raising money to ensure no veteran lives on the streets that they fought so bravely to protect,” according to the nonprofit U.S. Vets Inland Empire, which is hosting the inaugural Steps for Vets.
The event is scheduled to get underway at about 7 a.m. Saturday at the U.S. Vets office adjacent to Moreno Valley Skate Park, near the intersection of Sixth and N streets, on the east side of the air base.
“Run, walk or roll” is the mission motto. U.S. Vets said teams will include families, friends and military personnel, who will take a 5-kilometer trek “around the historic base,” using Sixth and Third streets, as well as Riverside and Meyer drives, all of which will be closed to traffic until 11:30 a.m.
“`Veterans’ and `homelessness’ should never be in the same sentence, and yet so many who bravely served our country find themselves sleeping on the streets,” according to an organization statement.
U.S. Vets Inland Empire was established in 2018 with the purpose of assisting members of the U.S. armed services with transitioning to civilian life.
Saturday’s event coincides with U.S. Armed Forces Day nationwide.
So far, more than $20,000 has been raised ahead of the walk from sponsors. Additional information is available at https://honor.usvets.org/event/steps-for-vets-inland-empire/e550061.
