Whitewashed Weathered Terracotta Pots
By Mia Rotell and Lauren Rotell
Want to add something chic and new to your living room? Or have some plants that need a new home? Fret no further, because these easy, stylish pots add a great rustic element to any room — or even your outdoor spaces!
What you need:
– A disposable cup
– Gardener’s lime
– A paintbrush that can be thrown away
– A 1/2-cup measuring cup
– 600-grit sandpaper
– An unfinished terracotta pot (it cannot be shiny)
– Something to protect your workspace
How to make it:
Step 1: Put down something to protect your workspace — like a large paper grocery bag.
Step 2: Remove all stickers from the pot(s) and sand off any sticky residue.
Step 3: Pour 1/2 cup of the gardener’s lime into the plastic cup.
Step 4: Thoroughly mix it with about 1/2 cup of water. You want a thick consistency. Add small amounts of water at a time so you don’t accidentally make the mixture too runny.
Step 5: Brush a heavy coat of the mixture onto the pot(s). If you want the effect to be thicker, make sure some of the wet clumps that settle at the bottom of the cup are on the brush.
Step 6: Set it aside and let it dry for two to three hours or overnight, depending on the size of the pot and the amount brushed on.
Step 7: Once the pot is dry, take your sandpaper and sand the entire pot.
Step 8: You’re done once you have the desired look!
Tip: Make it look mossy by rubbing the pot in freshly cut grass, then brushing on the mixture. The green and white will show when it is sanded. If you want this for outdoor use, go to a home improvement store and get a clear outdoor sealant spray.
