LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Red One,” a Christmas-themed action comedy starring The Rock, grossed $34 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
It was a disappointing total for a film whose budget reportedly was well north of $200 million. The Amazon MGM Studios release also stars Chris Evans and features J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu and Kiernan Shipka.
“Venom: The Last Dance,” which spent its first three weeks atop the domestic box office chart, slipped to second place with $7.3 million, Comscore reported.
“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” was third with $5.4 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada.
The Hugh Grant-starring horror film “Heretic” was fourth with $5.1 million in its second weekend, followed by “The Wild Robot” with $4.3 million in its eighth weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Smile 2” ($2.9 million), “Conclave” ($2.8 million), “Hello, Love, Again” ($2.32 million), “A Real Pain” ($2.3 million) and “Anora” ($1.8 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $73.6 million. The year-to-date total is $7.079 billion — down 11.1% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
