Books are mirrors or windows. They can mirror our own experiences, or they can open windows to new stories and perspectives.

And libraries are the bedrock of any community, opening doors and windows to our bodies and minds. They are safe spaces for all to gather and share in the ancient storytelling tradition. They are the critical infrastructure that house studying students, reading children, and curious adults.

Investing in a library is investing in the community. The residents. The people.

On December 6th, Perris unveiled the newly renovated Cesar E. Chavez Public Library in downtown Perris.

“Wow! This is truly an amazing building. I remember visiting this library on a field trip back in 1994 and thinking even then that it needed a renovation,” said Councilmember David Starr Rabb. “As a child and later during law school, I spent countless hours here. Seeing it now, beautifully modified and refreshed, fills me with pride. This library is a true gift to Perris, and I’m honored to help preserve it as a cherished public space.”

Built in the early 1990’s, the $1.2 million renovation breathed new life into this treasured space.

“I used to come to this library to study, and it played a significant role in helping me succeed,” said Councilmember Malcolm Corona, who brought the renovation project to life.

“If we aren’t thriving as a city, I don’t know who is.” Added Mayor Michael M. Vargas.

The renovation was funded by city and county collaboration, which included interior and exterior painting, restroom renovations, new interior lighting, new furniture, a reception desk, new computers, a mural, and updated flooring, containing tile at the entrance. These upgrades were aimed at enhancing the library’s functionality and overall appearance.

“This library holds two things that mean so much to me: first, the name – Cesar E. Chavez. I had the honor of marching with him,” Supervisor-elect Jose Medina reflected. “Chavez was an invaluable leader in the labor movement, fighting for the rights and dignity of farmworkers, and it’s important that we continue to honor his legacy by keeping his name attached to this library.”

“As a former teacher, libraries are especially meaningful to me. They play a vital role in educating people, and I am truly grateful for their impact on our community.”

The Cesar E. Chavez Public Library, located at 163 E. San Jacinto Avenue, is now open during regular business hours.
