Box Office 3-3-24 – `Dune: Part Two’ Has Biggest Opening Weekend of 2024 with $81.5 Million

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Dune: Part Two” debuted with a smash at the box office, taking in $81.5 million for the biggest opening weekend of the year so far, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Director Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up to 2021’s “Dune: Part One,” which also starred Timothée Chalamet, is based on a 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. Villeneuve’s two-part saga is the second time the story has been adapted into a big-budget film after David Lynch’s 1984 version starring Kyle MacLachlan. The latest film also features Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken.

“Bob Marley: One Love” slipped into second place after spending its first two weeks in the No. 1 spot, taking in $7.4 million Friday through Sunday, Comscore reported.

The drama “Ordinary Angels,” starring Hilary Swank, took in $3.8 million in its second week.

Fourth place went to Sony and Marvel’s “Madame Web,” which added another $3.2 million to its three-week total.

“The Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 7-8,” a multi-part saga about the life of Jesus Christ, saw its final installment debut in fifth place with $3.1 million at North American theaters, according to Comscore.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Migration” ($2.5 million), “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” ($2 million), “Wonka” ($1.7 million), “Argylle” ($1.4 million) and “The Beekeeper” ($1.1 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $113 million. The year-to-date total is $1 billion — down 13% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
