Championship Weekend

CORONA – Four area high school teams will be vying for a half-dozen CIF titles this weekend, as the winter sports season draws to a championship close.

The Corona Santiago girls’ soccer team kicks off the weekend with a match against Santa Margarita this afternoon (Friday) at 4:30, for the CIFSS Open title at Long Beach City College. Big VIII League rival Eastvale Eleanor Roosevelt girls’ soccer, competes against Palos Verde at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach for the Division 1 title at 6 pm on Saturday. The powerhouse league has an opportunity to take the top two championships in the Southern Section.

Santiago and Roosevelt will also be competing for basketball titles.

The Roosevelt boys, the second seed in the CIFSS Open Division, battle the top-seeded Studio City Harvard-Westlake Wolverines, on Friday at 8 pm at Cal Baptist in Riverside. Each school swept through pool play undefeated.

Santiago girls’ basketball team faces Los Angeles Brentwood for the CIFSS Division 1 title at Toyota Arena in Ontario, 6 pm Saturday.

Corona Centennial girls’ water polo squad captured the Division 3 title last weekend with a crushing 9-1 win over Palos Verde. Advancing to the regionals in Brackett 2, the Huskies upset Valhalla, eking out a 9-8 win at Mt SAC College on Tuesday. With only a single loss on the season, Centennial advanced to this afternoon’s (Friday) tilt against San Clemente, starting at 2:30 pm. The winner will advance to Saturday’s championship match against either Claremont or top-seed Alta Loma, 12:30 pm at Mt SAC.

In the boys’ CIFSS Open Division soccer championship, top-seed Riverside Arlington goes against second-seed Mater Dei, 7 pm tonight (Friday) at Vet’s Stadium at Long Beach City College.

But wait, there’s more. Spring season has sprung, and the Corona Panthers are the top-ranked team in the Southland and ranked 5th in the nation by MaxPreps.
