LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” a prequel to the blockbuster film series that began in 2012, opened with $44 million this weekend to easily lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler star in the new film, which also includes Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis and Jason Schwartzman. It finished ahead of another film opening this weekend, the family adventure “Trolls Band Together,” which made $30.6 million Friday through Sunday, Comscore reported.

“The Marvels” tied for third with $10.2 million, a sharp drop from its $47 million opening weekend. Also grossing $10.2 million was director Eli Roth’s holiday slasher film “Thanksgiving,” which opened this weekend.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” was fifth with $3.5 million in its fourth weekend in theaters.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “The Holdovers” ($2.7 million), “Next Goal Wins” ($2.5 million), “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” ($2.4 million), “Priscilla” ($2.3 million) and “Killers of the Flower Moon” ($1.9 million).

This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $115.3 million. The year-to-date total is $8.038 billion — an increase of 22% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
