Party Banners

“Your party looks great — the decorations are so cute! How much was all this?”

“Thank you, it was $300!”

If you host regularly, that fake conversation may hit a little too close to home. Hosting events is fun, but buying cute, overpriced decorations is not. Instead, make a customized sentimental DIY banner out of completely recycled materials for your next event — like a baby shower, birthday, or even a graduation!

What you need:

–       A mug that an empty toilet paper roll fits inside

–       Hot water

–       Toilet paper rolls

–       A bath towel

–       Jute rope (or ribbon)

–       Accessories for the flags

–       Hot glue gun

–       Two to three glue sticks

How to make it:

Step 1: Pour hot water into a mug. Water heated in a kettle works best because it stays hot longer.

Step 2: Place one empty toilet paper roll in the mug full of hot water. When the adhesive comes unstuck, take it out of the mug and lay it flat on a towel.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 until all the rolls, now thin cardboard diamonds, lie flat on the towel.

Step 4: Allow them to dry completely for about four hours — it may take longer. They do not need to be flipped.

Step 5: When they are completely dry, fold them in half so the tips of the diamonds touch.

Step 6: Repeat Step 5 for all the flags.

Step 7: Time to decorate! You can paint, glue on patterned paper or lace, use paint or chalk markers, add glitter — anything you want is on the table!

Step 8: Once the flags look how you want them, place them side by side next to the ribbon or jute rope.

Step 9: Fold the flags over the ribbon so they hang from the wide part of the flag, with the point facing down.

Step 10: Plug in your hot glue gun and glue where the jute rope/ ribbon touches the long crease of the flag — press.

Step 11: Put a dot of hot glue on the tip of the flag underneath the side that is decorated — press to keep both sides together

Step 12: Hang the banner — and it’s done!

Tip: “Happy Father’s Day” has 14 letters, so customize it specifically for Dad! You can also speed up the drying process with a hair dryer.
