RIVERSIDE (CNS) – Residents of the Riverside metropolitan area interested in serving on the Riverside County Board of Education were encouraged Tuesday to consider submitting an application to fill a slot that opened following the Nov. 8 election.
The Trustee Area 3 seat on the seven-member board will be vacated in December when Trustee Corey Jackson, D-Riverside, leaves to take his seat in the Assembly, representing the 60th District.
Trustee Area 3 encompasses the Moreno Valley Unified School District, Riverside Unified School District and Val Verde Unified School District.
Qualified applicants seeking an appointment to fill out the remainder of Jackson’s term, which expires on June 30, 2024, must be at least 18 years old, not be a convicted felon or an employee of the Office of Education or any K-12 school in the county.
The Board of Education is responsible for approving the county superintendent of schools’ budget, approving contracts for work on projects and special services, as well as setting policy for community day schools, juvenile offender programs and career technical programs operated by the superintendent’s office.
The governing body also serves as an appellate agency for settling disputes involving inter-district student transfers, student expulsions and charter school petitions.
Board meetings are generally convened the first Wednesday of each month.
Interested parties were asked to submit applications at www.rcoe.us/boardapplication.
The application deadline is Dec. 12, and interviews of qualifying candidates will be held on Jan. 10.
