MENIFEE (CNS) – Officials in Menifee Monday broke ground on a $35 million freeway overpass project intended to expedite traffic flows going east and west near the city center.
“The Holland Road Overpass is a critical infrastructure improvement project that will help alleviate traffic on Newport Road and expand overall mobility across our community,” Councilwoman Lesa Sobek said.
“Improving traffic congestion remains a high priority for our City Council, which is why we have invested nearly $500 million in capital improvement projects that will improve the quality of life for our residents here in Menifee.”
Sobek was joined by Mayor Bill Zimmerman and several other council members, as well by as Western Riverside Council of Governments Deputy Executive Director Chris Gray, for the groundbreaking at the project site, where Holland meets Interstate 215.
The location lacks a freeway over-crossing of any kind.
The new overpass, slated to be completed by the end of 2024, will feature four lanes, as well as bicycle lanes, sidewalks and noise-reducing retaining walls.
“The Holland Road Overpass will be a key regional connection relieving congestion for both Menifee residents and residents of the county,” Gray said. “This project is a major east-west corridor, and funding the overpass will benefit everyone traveling through the area.”
In addition to Newport Road, it’s anticipated that the bridge will relieve traffic jams on Scott Road, which also runs east and west, according to city officials.
The project will require extending Holland Road on the west side of the freeway, realigning Willowood Lane and carving out a new cul-de-sac at Dutch Circle.
The project budget is comprised of funds from a local sales tax approved in 2016, as well as shared county transportation fee revenue and other regional sources, officials said.
